This particular car has appeared on Detour a few times before so this is probably the last angle I’ll bother to post. From this POV I think it looks like a spaceship – a great big PINK spaceship. But that’s okay.

The very last leg of our trip, from Singapore to home, was fairly uneventful. It was just nice to be flying home and to see the sunrise from the plane, the sky very gradually changing from black to twilight blue, and then a sliver of light glinting in the distance before the whole sky opened up.

J was kind enough to pick us up, which was a lot nicer than a cab. She even brought us some milk so we could have a nice cup of tea soon as we got in.

So that was our India trip. Seventeen days, twelve cities, two countries, one wedding, and a whole bunch of excellent memories.

After the wedding we had one more night in the luxurious Kumarakom Lake Resort, and then it was time to leave the newlyweds and get on with the rest of our Indian trip.

We were driven down to Alleppey where half our group had rented a houseboat to travel the Kerala backwaters. After a bit of haggling over the boat details we settled in, chilled out and watched the river life flow by. We didn’t have to do much, which was great. Lunch appeared at some point. We had some gin and tonics. Then dinner appeared. We had some more gin and tonics. And somewhere along the line we even managed to fit in a Bollywood movie (two thumbs up for the film “Luck”… well, the first half I managed to stay awake for) before retreating to the airconditioned cabins and the safety of the mozzie net.

I should mention that this is a guest post taken by A, the big sheep-loving Kiwi. Thanks man.

[posted 01/11/09]
Hi all.

Sorry bout the three week silence here on Detour but work was absolute chaos in early October, just before H & I went globe trotting for a couple of weeks in India! Our first holiday in over three years we and a bunch of friends jumped at the chance to experience a bit of India, and somewhere along the way we found time to cheer on a very good friend as he married a lovely Indian girl at an idyllic resort.

So stay tuned for some pretty good stuff (IMHO) from the hot, humid, dusty, chaotic, 1st world meets 3rd world, culture shock that is India. From sarees to Rupees, tea plantations to temples, beer to beggars, I came home with 3,400 shots weighing in at 31.2GB – which should keep me in material for quite some time to come!

Initially I’ll do a day-by-day run through of the trip with an indicative shot showing what we did or where we were (and these will be date specific for anyone who is curious). After that it’ll be a complete mish-mash of shots, kind of how India works – dis/organised chaos!

So here’s day one, 16/10/2009, flying from Oz to Kochi – a 17 hour door-to-door trip.

The old saying goes something along the lines of “You’re either a Beetles or an Elvis man.” I can’t stand the Beetles, but ya know, I’m not all that into Elvis either. Stones/Floyd? Nope. I propose the saying be updated with the option of ‘band or DJ’, in which case I am definitely a DJ man. Most definitely a DJ man.

After the 4 year thing yesterday I thought today I’d delve as far back into my archives as I could, and pull out one of my first half-way decent shots. This is it, from November 2001. H and I had driven about 12k out of town to check out the ‘VW Day’ at the beachy suburb. I think we got there late because I don’t remember there being many vehicles left, but there was this nice blue VW Bus with shiny chrome hubcaps which caught my eye. That’s me in the reflection. Hi distant-past me.

Today H & I went to the motor museum, which I’ve been meaning to go to for a while. I thought I’d be able to get some good shots, but it didn’t really happen what with too many cars crammed together, too much shit in the background, and some pretty crap lighting. I’m not much of a rev head so while it was kind of interesting it wasn’t spellbinding, not even the motorbike section. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I like my modern cars and bikes – why the hell would I wish for old ‘technology’?!

But there were two things I thought were pretty cool to see in person – one was this, a DeLorean. Everyone knows it from the Back to the Future films, but I also remember it because it was built in Northern Ireland when I was growing up and all the controversy that later followed. The other cool thing to see was in amongst the scooters, a Sinclair C5! I won’t even try to explain that one, you either know it or you don’t. Suffice it to say it’s fairly crap 80’s when you see it up close.

Jesus I need to get out and take some shots. I’m spending an hour each night desperately combing through the archives over and over, then posting stuff I’m not always super happy with (I’m good with todays shot, yesterdays, not so much).

Previously seen as Vauxhall and Fluffy Dice.

I know I’ve said this before about classic cars, but they really don’t make ‘em like they used to. Every time I see these monstrous boats from the past I still scratch my head and wonder just how the hell they got so huge! And then you look at things today and it’s a stark contrast.
