Ripoff

Ripoff

30 Jun 2009

I'm not going to beat around the bush here. This is a ripoff. I could say inspired by, but let's call a spade a spade shall we?

When I did the swap with Jules, we chatted about local artists. Jules asked if I'd heard of Will Nolan, mentioning he did macro photographs of bottle tops, then printed them in large format. News to me, I said. But when I came upon a rusty old beer bottle cap in the street a few weeks later, I remembered the conversation and decided to give it a whirl myself. Course, king of procrastination here never progressed beyond the intention.

A month or so later I went to the Grad Exhibition and saw a couple of interesting large format photographs. Eventually I read the blurb and learned the distorted subjects were 'discarded bottle tops'. It took me a while to finally make the connection because I'd assumed Jules had been talking about metal caps while the shots on the wall were of plastic bottle tops.

Skip forward a couple of months more and I'm shooting some macro shit in my lightbox. Looking round for subjects I come across the rusty old beer bottle cap I'd pocketed months ago and decide to finally give it a whirl. And now, still another couple of months later I'm thinking (after much debate) what the hell, I'm coming out of the closet on this one. And here we are.

Curious? You be the judge.
