Buggles n the Hood
When I was a teenager I saw the film Boyz n the Hood, and I loved it. I particularly liked the cool little convertible VW Beetle that Cuba Gooding Jr's character Tre had. Ever since then I've had an affinity for Bugs. Ferraris, Lamborghinis and other sports cars were never going to happen, but a Bug? Now that was a cool car I could, I would, one day have!
So when I first met H and discovered she drove a Bug (called 'Buggles' no less!) I have to say, I was kinda impressed. Skip forward a few years, H still drove Buggles, and my dream just-about came true - I finally got a Bug of my own; 'RedBug' (not a convertible, but I didn't care!). It was about a year later when the dream ended - I hurriedly sold RedBug after the mechanic scratched his head and asked how it was I hadn't crashed, YET?! Soon after that H & I bought a nice modern 4 door sedan with AIRCON and we never looked back. Poor Buggles sat beside the shiny new upstart, we used him less and less, until one day we decided not to renew his insurance and stopped driving him altogether.
It's been more than two years now since he last moved. Dust covers his numerous rust freckles, a tire went flat when the old rubber finally cracked, and the stereo I bought for H as a good-bye present is probably worth more than the rest of him! It's time to put him out to pasture. But for every hill he couldn't climb, every buzz we got from the gasoline fumes, and every crammed trip with friends in the back (knees up to their chest as they held the floppy seatbelt in place to fool the cops) there was a whole lot of love for the old classic that was older than any of us. Buggles, you were a good little car and we'll always remember you!
