Unknown Past, Unknown Future

Unknown Past, Unknown Future

21 May 2008

Some more trolling for something to post uncovered my jewellery shots from last year. I posted my Claddagh ring back then but skipped over this one, my History of Ireland ring. It's pretty scuffed I know, but that's because I've worn it pretty much everyday for the last 15 years! Anyway, on to the ring itself.

Around the band are a series of simple symbols that tell the tale of Irelands history. Starting with the question mark, representing the unknown past, there are tales of round-towers and nordic invaders, St Patrick, English rule, the exodus on famine ships and the separation of northern/southern Ireland before it returns to the question mark, this time to represent the unknown future. It gets all the major points in there and thankfully I remember enough of my high school history to fill in most of the blanks when people ask questions.

For anyone who's curious about the rest of the symbols and the history they tell, this website has all the details.
