Harbour Bridge
Detour turns two today, so I've finally gotten off my ass, upgraded Wordpress, and thrown a new template together. It's all a bit rough around the edges, so bear with me over the coming days/weeks as I tweak it a little. Anyway, on with the show...
When my dad was about 18 or 19 he decided he'd see the world so he got himself a job on a ship for 2 years. My mother (his then girlfriend) was a bit distraught when she heard the news, and promptly threw up. But off he sailed, and see the world he did.
He brought back quite a few things from his world travels (an abacus from Japan, the 'Little Red Book' from China, maracas from ... where-ever maracas come from!) and lots and LOTS of slide photos, which were periodically taken out for guests. But these weren't your typical boring slideshows of family holiday photos spent camping in some non-descript field (they came later) these were worldly photos you'd normally see on TV. As kids we were enthralled!
Anyway, the point of this is... there was one shot which was a little famous in our house - a photo he took as his ship entered Sydney Harbour. Instead of the usual Opera House or bridge view shot, he'd snapped the underside of the bridge just as his ship passed underneath. It was a pretty simple shot but for some reason we all loved it, and now whenever I'm in Sydney I always try to take a walk under the bridge and I think of that shot and of him.
So this one's for you Dad! My under-bridge shot. (An upskirtbridge?!)
(He's not dead by the way, but I think he reads my site sometimes.)
And tell Mum I said Hi!
