Bird and his technicolour…

10 Aug 2007

Couldn't decide if they were technicolour tears, thoughts/dreams or something else, so I'll settle on technicolour dot dot dot.

I took a few shots of this, some closer, some further away. I preferred this one for a few reasons; it shows the complete setting, you can see how big the piece is, and because it looks like Bird is trying to see out the door - which is a white-wash of the unknown. Meanwhile the Metropolis fembot looks on, and the weird stick figure stands by on the right.

See, there was this art class I took once which made me overly aware of not just the main subject in an artwork, but the complete installation that surrounds the work. It's usually unintentional, but the surroundings do have an impact on what you see and how you perceive the work. Don't believe me? Pop your favourite bit of art on the back of a dingy toilet door and tell me it doesn't effect your appreciation of it. Heck, take the Mona Lisa and remove the frame, the museum and the hype and 90% of people wouldn't think it anything special - me included.

What's my point? I like Jules' Bird, but I appreciate it more because of it's urban setting. And this wall isn't just Bird, it's Bird + fembot + stick figure + everything else, including the door. And that's why I've cropped it so.

[end of rant]
