Gin

Gin

14 Jul 2007

I like gin. Ever since I worked in a bank, I've enjoyed the typical banker's drink. And I'm quite particular about my gin. Usually it's Gordon's over Schweppes tonic and a wedge of lemon -not lime!- lemon. If you want lime, go with the Bombay. I've had staunch arguments over this with people. Drunken of course, but no less vehement.

Proudly, I used to have a surprising collection of different gins, and I was pretty liberal with serving them, believe me! But the other week in the bottlo (off-license, liquor store) I spotted one I'd never heard of, and for $75 I wasn't surprised I'd never heard of it. So with my birthday round the corner, and with H going to be away at the time, I got one of my birthday presents early. Meet Hendrick's, my new little friend from Scotland, which recommends neither lemon nor lime... but a slice of cucumber! I'll let you know how it goes.

[edit 31/07/07 :: Interesting. It's a very smooth gin (for $75 I'd bloody hope so!) with a slight melon taste to it. Adding in the cucumber enhances the watermelon-like taste which makes it an 'interesting' variation on the usual gin theme. Perhaps not a gin I'd buy all the time but worth it for special occassions, or if you're a gin fanatic.

In the name of research I also tried it with lemon, but that over-powered the subtlety of the Hendrick's. And lime, which was still a little overly-citrus but complimented the flavours better.]
