Cactus

Cactus

28 Jun 2007

For as long as I can remember, I've had this habit of skipping over letters in strange or long names. For example, I think I'd read the first 4 Harry Potter books before H pointed out that the character wasn't Hermine, but Hermione. And now that I think about it I remember seeing an email explaining that we don't read each and every word in a sentence, instead we recognise the 'shape' of each word, and the sequence of words to understand what's being said. Or something like that. (Anyone seen that email and have it handy? It was full of intentionally mis-spelled words to xplane th pont.)

Now add to that habit my illiteracy in graf, and I read this piece as the word 'Cactus'. I see what could be a C at the start, big A in the middle followed by another C, and at the end I see an S. SO my brain adds those all up and locks on to Cactus. Which when I look closely at each letter I know isn't right... but bugger me if I can't figure out exactly what this piece is spelling out!
