Market Day

Market Day

25 Jun 2007

This isn't one of my arty shots, it's more a social commentary. See, the local market here is open Tuesday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday. For some reason, probably tradition, it's never been open on Sunday. But a few months back the city council, in some desperate attempt to get more people into the city on weekends, said they'd start opening the market on Sundays. All sounded good. Until the stall holders said they quite liked staying at home with the family on Sunday, thank you very much, and that the city council could go get fucked (okay, those are my words, not theirs).

And so, months later, the council still opens the gates on Sunday, and still the stall holders stubbornly stay at home! Which is just another reason why this town, nice as it is, refuses to grow up and become a proper city. It's quite content to stay mired in the 'good ol days', fearful of progress, scared longer shopping hours will corrupt the souls. And yet they quite happily let the casino and pubs with pokies (slot machines) stay open from 6am to 3am, 7 days a week.

So really, the only fruit you'll see on a Sunday is the ol' pokie machine. Gambling your savings away is just fine, but buying fresh fruit is a no-no! Dumb fuckin country town!
