Golden Canyon
One time when I was a little kid and we were on the annual family holiday somewhere in the UK my old man let me use one of his cameras, a miniature SLR that took 110 cartridge film. I remember thinking it was really cool to have a camera of my own to use, especially since it was so small.
One day on the holiday we were on some old train, as was normal with the kind of holiday my folks took, and we passed what I thought was a nice mountain/hill covered with trees, so out came the camera and I took a photo of it. My old man's response was to point out that such shots probably weren't something to waste film on because they could be a shot from anywhere. True, I thought, feeling a little down-trodden.
But you know, now I think the thing to consider with shots like that is when YOU look back on them YOU know it's not just a shot from anywhere, it's a shot from that day when you went to that place on that holiday. Names and places don't have to matter, only that YOU took the photo and YOU remember it. I think that's why a lot of snap-shots are taken, as reminders.
So while this may not be a particularly recognisable shot to anyone else and while it could be almost anywhere in the world, I know it's not. I know I took it in Death Valley on the Golden Canyon Interpretive Trail in 2006. And as a reminder, this one works - for me. And that's what matters.
