The Vision

The Vision

31 Jan 2007

Every city has it's local landmarks, and this is one of ours. This is a statue of Colonel William Light who supposedly stood a-top this hill, pointed towards where the town centre would be (and was) built, and set out his vision for the city that thought it could. Big deal you say? Well, his plan laid out the city within a square, with streets running in a north/south and east/west grid (a rarity outside north america) and specifically designated 5 large public squares (green spaces). Plus, the whole city was to be surrounded by further park-lands, which in 18 something-or-other was town-planning like never before! And to this day his town plan/vision has not only survived, but made this city that bit more habitable with green spaces in and around the city.

Good ol' Willy, ya might have been a bit of a toff, but ya did good son!
