Drought

Drought

31 Dec 2006

I mentioned before that there's a drought down here right now, and last week when H & I took a trip to the Riverland we saw the two extremes.

The River Murray is the second-longest river in the country, and defines the border between two states so it's big and wide. As usual it was busy with people boating, jet-sking and meandering up or down stream on houseboats. The other extreme is this, one very dried-up creek we passed over.

I don't know for sure if this creek was a thriving ecosystem until the recent drought hit, but the reeds and grasses suggest it was. It's amazing to see the expanse of dried and cracked farming land on news reports, but it's quite shocking to see the parched land in person.
