Black Boy
Time marches on, attitudes change, and sometimes the language of yester-year bites the modern day on the ass.
This is one of the 'Xanthorrhoea' genus of flowering plants native to here. Its common name is "Black Boy", which Wikipedia tells me "refers to the purported similarity in appearance of the trunked species to an Aboriginal boy holding an upright spear". Not that you'd ever get away such a naming these days! Oh goodness no, very un-politically correct don't you think?! In which case the safe term around the dinner table would be 'grasstree', which is suitably descriptive, but lacks somehow lacks the 'charm' the early explorers injected into such things. (Like I said before, I think those early explorers were making shit up as they went along!)
