Our first hop was Japan for a 22 hour stopover with minor culture shock on the side. I have to say it was really interesting to be on the flip-side of the language barrier, but it seems english has permeated Japan a lot so we found most people had a fairly good grasp of what we were saying and we got by just fine.

Signs and menus sometimes had a bit of english, but not always, as with this little restaurant we happened upon in Shinjuku. H & I puzzled over the menu for a minute or two, throwing occassional "now what?" glances at eachother before the global answer arrived... the 'picture menu'! If in doubt, show a picture. Worked like a charm, and we ate quite well. Pity the bill was half the money I'd brought! Oh well.
