The Wind That Shakes The Barley

The Wind That Shakes The Barley

31 May 2006

You know, I'd tried to process this shot once before but didn't come out with anything worthy, so I left it to the archives, never to be seen in public. But then the other evening I was glancing through my archives and came across it again. What the hell, I thought, I'll give it one more try. And boom, before long I had reworked it to an excellent shot! See, sometimes you're on, and sometimes you're not. And this all goes to prove my point of not deleting; sometimes a less than good shot can become an excellent shot with the right tweaking, when you're in the right mood.

So this actual shot was taken over the kristmas break, when I headed down south to catch some waves with friends. As I got closer to our destination I passed numerous fields, and thought the grass could make for a good shot. But I kept on driving, not entirely sure it'd be worth stopping, or if I'd be able to catch the shot I wanted. And on I drove.

On the way back, as I zipped by yet more fields without stopping I finally thought "Awah fuckit, I'll regret it if I don't at least TRY!" and pulled over, hopped the fence, and snapped off two exposures before running back to the car. - Now, six months later, and a bit of processing, it's one of my favourites.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure it's grass, not barley. And I've titled it as I have because the scene makes me think of the Dead Can Dance song "The Wind That Shakes The Barley", which is a beautiful melancholy love song.
