Perpetual Memorial

Perpetual Memorial

22 May 2006

I'd spotted the local war memorial lit up a few weeks ago, but completely forgot about it as a potential shot till I was wandering around town the other night. I took a few full-view shots from a slight distance, then went up close and low, suddenly hitting on the perfect shot for the scene.

It wasn't until I was processing the shot that I suddenly noticed the wording at the bottom of the frame. The word 'perpetuate' made me think that these memorials are to remind us of history, and that each year Remembrance Day does the same, so the memorials are inherently perpetual.

I was mildly curious to know what the rest of the inscription said, so a few days later I went back: "To perpetuate the courage, loyalty, and sacrifice of those who served in the great war 1914 - 1918"
