Blue Sisters

Blue Sisters

09 Mar 2006

The various tree images I've posted so far (Canopy, Blue Bark, Blue Bark 2 & Blue Bark 2 Revisited) are all from this area of the world, the Blue Mountains. So called because the volatile oils evaporating from the eucalyptus trees give the air a bluish tinge. It's quite amazing, because it really does look blue, or at least hazy shades of.

This is an particularly well-known rock formation known as The Three Sisters, which I guarantee every single tourist who has passed through the area has taken a photo of - which is fair enough, because they are pretty impressive. Look closely at the picture and in the first dip from the left you can see the small bridge that connects to the first sister. See those little ant sized people? That should give you a rough idea of how big these formations are.

Legend has it that there were three sisters who fell in love with three men from a neighbouring tribe. But tribal law forbid their marriage and a battle ensued. A witch doctor wanting to protect the sisters turned them to stone, but before he could turn them back, he was killed in the fighting. No one else was able to turn the sisters back, and to this day they remain as stone.
