Lookout
As I mentioned before, about once a year H&I head to a zoo or similar to meet n greet the critters. In the last few years the penguins have become my favourite, but a couple of years ago I came across the meerkats and fell in love with them. Their playfulness, close family groups, cute little faces and noises... hey, what's not to love?
So the thing with meerkats is that they're prey animals, meaning they are usually dinner; for someone else! So they always have a lookout on guard for the mob (mob or gang are the correct collective nouns). The lookout stands tall, up on their hind legs, and keeps a watch for predators. Seems eagles are their arch nemesis so most of the time the lookout stares skyward, watching and waiting for that swooping dot, ready to give the warning call to the mob!
This was a nice little family that I managed to catch a shot of. You can just see the baby behind the parents, perhaps learning that you've always to be on-guard?
And one thing I didn't know before writing this post was The Meerkat Motto: "Respect the Elders, Teach the Young, Cooperate with the Family, Play when you can, Work when you should, Rest in between. Share your Affection, Voice your Feelings, Leave your Mark."
[edit 14/05/06 :: submitted to Pxite Mother - Perhaps it's a bit cutesy to post this in the 'Mother' category, but I don't have many shots of people on my phlog, so it's the best I have for now.]
