The Method

You probably won't believe it but what you see here is what came out of the camera, completely unedited and undoctored. Even I find that hard to believe, but it's true.

The natural colours are an orange flower set against green foliage. The dramatic colour shift came about by setting the white-balance to the background. I didn't really know what I was doing, and didn't plan on this effect, but I was pleasantly surprised by the result. I'm quite proud of it, and to be honest it's one of my favourite shots. In the top ten at least.

I've tried to replicate this method a few times but never with such success.

The story

I'm not big into family events, but it was Christmas Day so there was the obligatory family get-together. H's aunt-n-uncle had a big house so we all just kicked back and drank champers by pool, as is the way in sunny climes. The champagne made it all that bit more bearable.

This was one of the flowers in J's garden, nothing special, nothing outstanding. But you see, that's the beauty of macro, it magnifies your perspective, forces you to notice what you might otherwise overlook. Something as simple as a little flower takes on gigantic proportions.
